Nicola McConville 3rd Dan
CRB checked Judo Coach

I started Judo in 1981 at the age of 5, and 30 years on I’m now a 3rd Dan Black Belt, coaching and running two clubs.

When I first started I joined the AJA, I used to train at least five times a week, twice at my local club and I would travel to Lincoln or Scunthorpe for the extra three training sessions. I entered my first competition in October 1983 taking away a Silver in the under 7yrs, this got me hooked on judo and competitions so I carried on training hard and took part in at least one competition a month.

By May 1986 I had achieved my Junior Brown Belt but I was only 10yrs old, this meant I wouldn’t be able to grade again until I was 16 for a senior grade. I spent a lot of time travelling to other clubs for training sessions and courses, training hard meant I even had to train at home in my spare time. All this paid off, as from 1988 – 1992 I was selected for the Great Britain Squad.

In January 1991 I joined the Bushido ZaZen International Society and by November 1991 I had achieved my Ko Dan (Junior Black Belt). My dad had just established a second club so I became a class leader helping teach.

In October 1992 I represented the society in an International Competition in Holland and came away with a Silver Medal. I achieved my 1st Dan in April 1993, my 2nd Dan in March 2006 and my 3rd Dan in June 2009.

I am now a qualified Grading officer and Area Coach, running two very successful Judo Clubs. I organise and teach at various Kata courses throughout the year and organise as many competitions as possible. I am now currently working hard towards my 4th Dan.

I believe in running friendly and family orientated clubs designed to be affordable for everyone.
